Program (Sample Program: 2018-19)

This 3 week program for MBA students includes an introduction to business, culture, and society in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) Region. Through seminars (in English) taught by the Industry Leaders and Faculty at the American University in the Emirates as well as with site visits and cultural immersion in Dubai and the surrounding Emirates, students are introduced to the Economic Policies, Business Practices, Finance and Islamic Banking, Dubai Stock Exchange, and Marketing Strategies of the GCC. The course and activities cost includes 3-credits course tuition, airfare, lodging, excursions, most meals, and local transportation during the program activities.

Course and Activities Cost and Payment Information

2022-23 Course and Activities Fees(1, 2, 3, 4): $8,000 - $8,800

The program cost includes  3 Credits Course Tuition, Airfare, Double Room Occupancy, Daily Breakfast, Most Lunches and Several Dinners, Wireless Internet, Excursions, and Airport Pick-up/Drop-off for students on the group flight.

1 All listed fees are subject to change and cannot be guaranteed until sufficient students are registered. Also, VU reserves the right to cancel the course if the required number of applications have not been completed by the deadline. In the event a program is canceled, all deposits will be refunded to the student account minus any expenses incurred for programming purposes.

2 The program cost is tentative as it may change based on the the fuel/tax charges levied by the carrier at the time of ticketing.

3 If you do not hold a USA Citizenship, then you will need a UAE Visa before leaving USA. The UAE Visa fee is not included in the program cost. Details of the UAE Visa are at https://www.uae-embassy.org/visas-services/visas-for-non-us-citizens. The host institution or the hotel can sponsor the participant's Visa and the cost associated with this service needs to be settled directly with the sponsor.

4 On prior approval of the Program Director and the Graduate Office, it is possible for a spouse to accompany the participant on the Dubai program. However, it should be noted that the spouse can only participate in the cultural aspects of the program. The participant will be billed the associated cost to their VU student account for the various cultural activities including transportation at the conclusion of the program by the Bursar. Furthermore, the spouse will need to provide additional information to Villanova University in order to be considered for their participation in the program. (To be confirmed for 2022 - 2023)

Application Form

The Dubai Immersion course registration process is by completing and submitting the Application Form no later than 30 September 2022. Admission in the program is based on rolling admissions for the first 32 applications and the program may fill prior to 30 September 2022. 

After 30 September 2022, inquire about the availability of participation in the program via email to the Faculty Program Director

A non-refundable commitment fee of $500 is due within two weeks from the receipt of the acceptance letter. Final payment is due as advised in the acceptance letter.

A separate service charge of $50 is charged by the Bursar for the processing of the payment for students who are not registered during the Fall semester.

For 2022-23, the Bursar will electronically invoice your student account (V-Bill) beginning on Monday, October X, 2022. The balance in the full amount must be received October XX, 2022.

Good Academic Standing.

Favorable Letter of Recommendation (Only for non-VU participants only)

No language proficiency is required.

No Prerequisites.

Open to newly admitted students in all Graduate Programs.

 

Available to students enrolled in all Graduate Programs in the Villanova School of Business at Villanova University.

Course Offering

MBA 8523 International Business Studies: Dubai International Immersion - 3 credits
Seminars at AUE in Dubai include the following topics but are not restricted to: Culture and Religion in the Gulf, Economic Policies of GCC countries, Business Negotiation in the Gulf, Marketing Strategies in the Gulf region, Asset Management, Real Estate, Tourism Industry, and Financial Centers and Islamic Banking in the Gulf region.

The MBA 8523 course is a 3-Credit Multidisciplinary Elective and counts towards the International Business Specialization. Check with the VSB Graduate Office for the additional details.

There may also be a session at the US Consulate in Dubai on US Export Policy in the GCC.

A visit to the College of Business Administration at Abu Dhabi University may be planned during the visit to Abu Dhabi.

Note: Accepted students will be automatically enrolled by the Villanova University's Office of Education Abroad in MBA 8523 designated course for this program.


Business and Industrial Visits

During the previous years, the students visited Al-Rawabi Dairy, Dubai Chamber, Dubai Courts, Dubai Financial Market (DFM), Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), Lamprell plc (An Oil Rig building, upgrade, and refurbishment company), DuCab (Dubai Cable), DUBAL (Dubai Aluminium Company), US Consulate Dubai,   and The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina. A similar program is planned for this year.

Cultural Activities

Cultural activities for the students during the previous years for this program included a trip to the Heritage Village, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Yas Hotel, Emirates Palace, Ferrari World, and Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah Museums and Souks, Dubai City Tour, and Desert Safari and Desert Party with Camel rides and Henna as well as visits to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Cultural Understanding in the Bastakiya - Historical Town Center, Welcome Dinner at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, A Visit to Global Village, Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Atop Burj Khalifa (Tallest building in the World. MI-4: http://www.youtube.com/v/3FyO_bnIsqk?version=3), New Year's Eve Celebration at Atlantis The Palm, a Dhow Cruise on Dubai Creek, Farewell Dinner at Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Tea/Refreshments at the Skyview Bar or a private room with the view of the The World Islands at the Burj Al-Arab. A similar program is planned for this year.

Housing, Meals, and Transportation

In Dubai, during the past few years, the students have resided in a 2-Bedroom Apartment Hotel (Abidos Dubailand) with quad occupancy in close proximity to host institution. The apartment includes a large living/dining room, 2.5 bathrooms, fully equiped kitchen with a washing machine, among other amenities. There is a rooftop swimming pool, steam room, a well equiped excercise room, among other facilities. There is a supermarket and a pharmacy located on the outside of the hotel facility. The same residency will be provided if possible.

Housing and most meals of different ethnicities are included with the program fee. Students will travel predominantly by bus that will be provided for transportation by the host institution for all program related trips while in Dubai. For personal travel in Dubai, metered taxis are readily available at very reasonable rates to and from the host institution and/or the hotel. Language is not a problem on the host institution campus as English is widely spoken. Even off campus, students will be able to converse with local people in English throughout the GCC region.
